In the middle of the formerly non-descript roundabout that's just outside the entry to Hollystown, you'll see a “Giant of a Man.” The owner and founder of of Hollystown Golf Club, Oliver Barry, commissioned this sculpture in conjunction with Fingal County Council to mark the development of the Hollystown Area over the past 10 years and to celebrate the 15th Birthday of Hollystown Golf Club on July 4, 2007. “The Swing” was designed by Alan Ryan Hall, an internationally-renowned sculptor based in Valencia Island, Co. Kerry.
The Barry Family has lived in Hollystown for over 30 years and farmed their land before developing and opening Hollystown Golf Club in July 1992. Oliver Barry has always been interested in the history of the Dublin 15 area and decided to dedicate a sculpture to the history and heritage of the past residents of Hollystown—especially those who had worked the land through Famine times. The Hollystown area contains many features of The Famine including topographical changes and burial sites.
The sculpture also makes a modern connection to the use of the Hollystown land as it also represents the “Swing” of the many golfers who now come to play golf at Hollystown Golf Club.
Over the coming months and years it is hoped “The Swing” will become a recognised Irish Landmark and give Hollystown and its People a unique identity. Irish pr
Professional golfer Paul McGinley was part of the group that unveiled and dedicated The Swing.
